PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY  DISTRICT V COFFEE CLUB

Mission Statement

The District V Coffee Club was started in the fall of 2004 by Derek Matthews, founder of True Vision, a youth development organization, with the support of Major Annette James, previous Commander of Prince George’s County Police District V and in cooperation with Clinton Safeway Management and the Starbucks Company.  At our initial meeting,  common concerns were expressed by residents of District V over the direction in which many of our youth are headed, and the need to educate and involve the community in ways to steer our youth in a more positive direction.  As often as feasible, a District V officer attends our meetings and briefs us on youth and other crime statistics in District V, as well as other public safety matters.

Out of the original focus evolved  more comprehensive discussion of all topics related to public safety and a more livable community, including crime prevention; the need for stronger police and citizen relationships; the need for greater parental and community  involvement with our children, at home, in the schools, and in our neighborhoods; more cooperative relationships with parents and school administrators; better planning for development and transportation in this area  (defined by the Planning Commission as the developing tier of Prince George’s  County); increased awareness of the State and County  political and court systems and their impact on our daily living; the need to preserve local historical sites; and whatever other community concerns we have.

All of the above topics are interrelated as citizens strive to work cooperatively to keep District V a place that we all are proud to call “Home.”  The Coffee Club is a public forum for ALL citizens, business owners, organizations, and public officials who share our goal.  Every one is provided an opportunity to share his or her views on any topic of discussion.  It is understood that the Coffee Club does not endorse any political or religious organization.
